Fujifilm XF 18-55mm F2.8-4

The Fujifilm XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 delivers a field of you of 28-83mm (compared to the 35mm System). It can be used for about any situation where you don’t want to switch between primes and the aperture fit’s your needs.

It covers the 18mm F2 and is optically even better…except missing that one stop, the size and the lovely aperture ring of the 18mm.

It covers the 56mm F1.2 and focuses faster …at cost of 3+1/3 stops and inferior optical quality.

It covers the 35mm F1.4 and focuses much faster …at cost of  2+2/3 stops and inferior optical quality.

This picture was shot with the 18-55mm and a profoto flash light, as open as possible as the ambient light was fading.

Performance:

The lense is sharp and contrasty with a nice bokeh. Of course the background separation suffers from the relatively slow aperture – compared to primes, compared to other zooms of course the aperture is still big and fast. At the given aperture it is up on the level of the primes in terms of sharpness.

Focus:

Focusing works fast and accurate. It is the best lense from fuji for fast focus.Remark: As of today! I was able to play with the upcoming 16-50mm F2.8, which focuses even faster in my opinion.
It’s far better then the 35mm, 56mm and 60mm.

Handling:

The lense is light and handles generally good. As the aperture is not fixed, the aperture ring is not fixed. I don’t like that. But then no DSLR lense even has an aperture ring anymore. The size is a bit on the large side for the X-E2…but then most the fuji primes are even bigger and heavier.

Summary:

Recommended lense. It comes in the kit for small money, so it’s good to have it. If it would not be in the kit, I would probably not buy it – just because I’m more used to work with primes. Also you save yourselves from changing lenses in certain situation on the road, at the cost of 1-2 Stops.

Description:

The XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens from Fujifilm is the first zoom lens for the X mount on their X-series interchangeable lens digital cameras, and is sure to find a home in the kit bags of many shooters who are already attached to this APS-C sized camera system. A versatile, compact lens that can travel easily and respond to a range of shooting situations, the XF 18-55mm has the focal length equivalency of 27-84mm in the 35mm format. This covers a standard zoom range from basic wide-angle to medium telephoto and is ideal for day-to-day shooting needs from group shots to portraiture, cityscapes to natural vistas. It’s a great lens for street photography as well.

The f/2.8-4 aperture means the lens will stay fast at most focal lengths and in most shooting situations and its 3 aspherical lens elements and 1 abnormal dispersion element prevent aberration to give you crisp details and accurate colors throughout the image frame. A fast, linear motor-driven autofocus system will get you to your focus smoothly and quickly and keep you shooting confidently. An optical image stabilization system helps to keep your images sharp by compensating for any camera shake, especially in low light and its focus range starts at 11.8″ (30 cm) in wide-angle and at 17.7″ (45 cm) at the telephoto length. With the popularity of the X-series cameras growing and the lens line expanding, it’s great that Fujifilm has introduced this compact, versatile zoom lens.
